Can you change the output file format in pov from a *.bmp to a *.jpg or
*.gif with out haveign to use another program to do that ???

*.jpg -> reading only in 3.5 see povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions

*.gif -> nope - png is better anyway & not patented
(http://burnallgifs.org/)- use +FN on the command line / in an ini file
- see the windows docs "File output options" for more
- tiff will be in 3.5
- tga (+FC Compressed RLE +FT uncompressed)
- png (+FN)
- ppm (+FP)
- system specific (+FS) (bmp for win, pict on mac)
also you can set the post-rendering shellout to a program which will
convert your image automatically - see docs for more
