It has taken a long time but we now have the new version ready, we
intend to make a short beta phase (about a week, this of course depends
if there are problems). Those who want to test can find the new version at:

http://megapov.inetart.net/

You will see we also updated the website with a new sample scene gallery
and some other useful information.

We encourage those who have some experience with POV-Ray to test the
beta version - this will help us to find possible flaws which might be
there since it was quite some time since the last release. Please
report problems to povray.unofficial.patches.

We have a few known issues:

- the documentation is still not complete, the post processing patch is
missing there for example.
- there are a few problems with CAMERA_VIEW_PATCH. You can use it but
it might lead to unexpected results.

And as a preventive answer to the FAQ "why was patch xxx not included in
this version":

Patch xxx was:

- buggy
- incomplete
- published too late to be included
- incompatible to POV-Ray 3.6
- no one found the time to add it
- did not appear useful

(Of course not all together - select what you think fits best).

AFAIK MegaPov is a kind of "official" unofficial patch of POV-Ray,
if you know what I mean.
It serves as a good testbed for possible new features that might be
added to the official version in the future.

I guess there will always be a separate MegaPOV distribution.
I wouldn't be surprised if a really useful experimental feature (several new
spline types) would make it into POV-Ray 4 though...

oh... and I really like the fact that users can provide their own homebrewn
radiosity samples set without recompiling! :D :D :D

Eli

How did you get that idea? Why would the official version be a collection
of patches that sometimes turn out to be coded badly? MegaPOV is a version
seeking to collect all patches people have made that are at least declared
ready by their author and that turn out to be reasonably well working. It
is an independent project and is not even intended to replace any official
version of POV-Ray. It is intended to make many patches available to more
users if they are interested.

This of course not quite correct, the criterias which patches are
included in MegaPOV are quite elaborate and the question if the author
thinks the patch is ready has not much importance. What plays an
important role is of course how useful the patch is (useful to the user,
not to the programmer).

For braves who knows how to experiment with beta versions, there are sample
scenes for postprocessing. Please imagine syntax from there or wait for
completion of manual.

Making this more precise: there is nothing wrong in using
pigment{camera_view{...}} as described in manual and is used in delivered
samples. The known problem appears in the shadow thrown by object textured
with camera_view pattern and viewed inside camera_view itself. Since in
majority of the applications this shadow use small area of the image itself,
and is rather dark, the bug it hardly noticable (and therefore appeared to us
in final stage of preparing MP11), so I would like to encourage to experiment
with this feature as well so other possible problems could be focused.

In old version of MegaPOV this certainly was a main criteria. Good to know
that it no longer is an important one.
