In retrospect, I figured out that the documents are correct, but some
clarifying information could be added which would help people stuck in the
same  boat I was in.


The camera_view puts a what a camera would see into a pigment between
<0,0,0>, and <1,1,0>, exactly as stated in the docs.   The following
suggestion may only help idiots such as myself, but here goes:   It should
say that a consequence of this would be that a small object placed at the
look_at position would therefore be at <0.5,0.5,0> in the pigment pattern .
  I guess intuitively I was expecting it to be at <0,0,0> and not finding
it there was driving me nuts.
