In the realtime graphics world, cube maps are now being used as better
replacements to spherical environment maps. Similarly, would using a cube
map instead of a spherical HDRI map produce better results in MLPov?

I think they're using cube maps to get more speed. I don't know if that will
necessary for POV-Ray since the speedup is only noticable for realtime I
think.
