Has anyone ever thought of using an ior_map to simulate variable refraction
i.e. heat rising from a black asphalt road in the middle of the desert or
the heat ripples from the aforementioned meteorite plummeting through the
atmosphere...etc...??? Is this possible?

Several have thought of it (even recently) but no one has coded it
into the program yet either officialy or unofficialy. There are
technical reasons why it would be difficult to code having to do
with the way a ray is traced when leaving one ior value and entering
the next. It becomes difficult to predict which direction the ray
should travel next.

(Probably a poor description of the problem but close enough)

Stock reply:

Read the discussions of this in povray.general, povray.unofficial.patches,
povray.programming, povray.binaries.images, povray.advanced-users, and
povray.windows.

Maybe this should be in the VFAQ (or is it already?).
