It would be neat to be able to render an idea without having to save the
file. Perhaps you are developing a macro for a scene, and don't want to
make a new file just for the macro. Is there anything stopping such a
helpful version of pov from being possible?

I'm not sure, but I think it might already be possible with standard
POV-Ray - if you use the proper command line switches and ini-file
settings. I'm think there is a way to disable the output file.

POV-Ray for Windows v3.0 allowed you to do this but I am not sure why
the feature was discontinued in v3.1. The work around I use is if I
want to return to a prior state I use multiple undo's to get back
where I was at. This technically bypasses the save feature allowing
you to save at any point you want in your development.

Only drawback to this last method is if you are working with a 50 meg
file.

I didn't mean saving the image file; I already know about -f. What I'm
talking about is how povray makes you save the text file before rendering the
image.

I thought of this about 30 minutes after I responded to you. It would
have helped if you had said POV-Ray for Windows, and it would have
also helped if you had been specific about which file you wanted to
avoid saving.

As for your issue, POV-Ray for Windows lost the ability to render a
scene without saving a *scene* file, partly because this change helped
avoid program crashes. I'm not too familiar with the programming
details, but I remember Ron Parker and Chris Cason discussing this
very same issue. If I remember correctly, it would be a *lot* of
effort to keep the old functionality, avoid crashes, and keep the same
editor. It would also be a lot of effort to switch editors.

If you need to know real details, perhaps someone else can fill you in
much better than I can.

I'll take your word for it. I think I'm happy with the way pov makes you save text
files now, come to think of it :)

I don't remember why this was done, but I think we're working on changing
it back in 3.5. No guarantees, of course.

These are my opinions. I do NOT speak for the POV-Team.
