Gentlemen,

There seems to a limit in distance values at 1e7  i.e one can't put objects
at great distance - they disappear no matter how large they are.  Is it
possible to fix this?

Yes, there is.  Currently there is no way around it without compiling
POV-Ray yourself.

Please note that floating point calculations are not infinitely accurate.
If you use extremely huge and/or (specially and) extremely small values,
your calculations will become very inaccurate.

  This effect can be seen quite easyly with a mandelbrot zoomer program
(which doesn't support unlimited floating point calculations, like fractint
does). Just zoom very large and you will see what I'm talking about.
