Is the trace function indigenous to the SuperPatch only or did it
originate elsewhere ?

It's indigenous to the superpatch. I wrote that one myself, unlike
many of the others. The crackle stuff and the facets texture are
the same way.

Thanks.
Next question:
Has anyone ported your patch to the Mac platform yet and if so who
and where ?

I know Chris Huff was working on it; I don't know if he succeeded. I've
been looking for my own cheap PowerMac for a few months now, but I suspect
that the cost of the computer plus a compiler for it will be out of my
reach for a while. That, plus a little hardware work on my Amiga, and I
could test on almost every platform POV runs on. :)
parkrrrr wanders off to look for a free copy of Solaris/x86 or a cheap Sun
workstation...

Well, an iMac would do (as low as $899 + tax for the original model). You
can get a reasonable compiler for free from Apple
<http://developer.apple.com/tools/mpw-tools/index.html>. The official Mac
version comes with a makefile for it. If you like a Unix/shell like
environment MrC is a nice compiler, the only problem is that for some reason
the code it generates (or some odd POV-Ray core code issue) make it a little
more unstable with some very complex scene files.
Getting CodeWarrior would be better, of course <http://www.metrowerks.com>.
If you don't get academic discounts it is around $500 or so.
You may also want to contact Yvo & Rene Smellenbergh
(sme### [at] skynetbe), they have a Mac custom compile and know quite a
lot about Mac programming.

Depending on what you call cheap there are some offeres here in Germany for
$2000 (3900 DM) to $3000 (5800 DM) :-)

I haven't succeeded yet, I was going to wait for the next version of the
Superpatch source. As for the computer: as Thorsten said, one of the
original iMacs is about $800-900, and you can get a decent older Power
Mac on e-bay for less, although you will have to get a monitor. If you
have a PC monitor you want to use, there are adapters available for
about $10-20.

Why not just set up a Mac emulator. I had one set up for a while to evaluate
a couple of PovMac utilities and they ran ok on my system. The hardest part
was learning all of the differences in the operating systems (not something
I will ever choose to repeat again thank you very much as I would rather have
dental drilling and filling done instead).

There are several limits in this approach. The main one is that you can't do
the deveopment on a current Mac OS, as Apple does no longer support 68K
processors from Mac OS 8.5 on (we are now a 8.6 and 9.0 will follow later
this year). The second one are legal issues. If you don't get a Mac ROM (its
the Mac "BIOS") you will need a copy of one and the Mac ROM is of course
completely copyright protected and Apple has an unbeateable army of lawyers
to enforce that :-) Many tried, all died! The supply of old ROM modules
from old Macs is very limited.
That is why there never were/are Mac clones (also they had a licensing
program a few years ago, but they stopped it) out there. Nobody ever managed
in the past 15 years to write a legally clean replacement for the ROM.
