As I understand it, photons are shot at the center of the object
bounding shape from the light source, right(except for spotlights and
cylinder lights)? What direction are they shot if the light source is at
the center of the object bounding shape?

If the light source is within the object's bounding box, the photons are shot
in all directions from the light source.
