Could someone look into making Povray do variable alpha channels? What I
mean is comparing a piont transparency against the backround, and placing
that info in the alpha channel. Can this be done? Povray doesn't seem to
support it currently.

How about having the ability to specify a separate image as the alpha
input? Or even better, a pigment, and don't restrict it to specifying
transparence for image_maps, let it work for any pigment. Sound good?
Now we just have to figure out how to do it... :-)

Don't expect it anytime soon. I tried something very similar as part of
my transparency patch, but with little success.
I may make another attempt based on the POV 3.5 sources, when it is
released.
