Hello newsgroup,

this is my first posting here (after some days of reading ;-), so hopefully
I do everything right....

I have installed POVray 3.5 from my SuSE 9.0 install DVD and additionally to
that I am using KPovModeler 1.0 (KDE 3.1.4, kernel 2.4.21).

Do you recommand to upgrade to 3.6 which means self-compiling as I could not
find a rpm file suitable for 9.0.

If I do compile POVray 3.6 myself do I neet to remove anything before (like
"rpm -e -nodeps povray 3.5" or similar)?

What advantages do I have to expect from upgrading (better rendering
performance, more features)?

Does it make sense to start with 3.5 and upgrade later when I am more
experienced wiht povray and when I upgrade the kernel (to 2.6) and KDE (to
3.3) - if I ever attempt this ;-)

Thanks for your assistance

Raimund

The official Linux binary version will run without problems so no need
to self compile (although that will work without problems as well). It
is definitely a good idea to upgrade although i don't know if the
version of KPovModeler you use will work with 3.6.

You can find detailed installation instructions on:

Thank you for this advise, I got povray 3.6 installed and it all worked well
(I just followed the instruction).

At the end I had some minor troubles to get the test rendering done

does work as USER .... as mentioned in the istruction....

Yes, it seems so :-) And welcome!

Depending on which machine you want to run POV-Ray on, you may find
some substantial benefit (speedwise) in recompiling the program from sources.
In this case it is definitely recommanded to upgrade to 3.6.x as the
build process is likely to be as easy as running the usual 'configure; make'
scheme. Refer to the INSTALL document of the source version.

Normally not, you can have both versions working in parallel (thanks
to some appropriate changes in 3.6). The only thing you should take care of,
however, is to rename the existing 'povray' binary to e.g. 'povray-3.5' before
you install a newer version which is also named 'povray'.

Performance is in general very similar, though some specific features
(e.g. photons) were optimized better in 3.6. There are also a few additional
features in 3.6, summarized in http://www.povray.org/download/features/ .

Are you sure ?
I saw on the benchmark site that we can't compare 3.5 and 3.6 as the
last one is slower than the previous version ... and I can see the
difference on my very very slow SUN Server 5.

this speed difference is scene dependent. some things have increased in
speed, so scenes that use those features will show a speed increase.
Atleast, that's my high level, over-generalized view of it.

i think the benchmark site means that if you are trying to compare 2
different systems for rendering speed, don't use a benchmark from 3.5 on one
system and a benchmark from 3.6 on the other system.
