I keep checking the povray.org page for the golden link... something like
"Download a public beta of POV-Ray 3.5 for mac, windows and LINUX." but
it never does appear :(
I know the pov guys are busy working with other stuff and a linux beta of
3.5 might not be a great priority (and Mac IS?) but even an update,
something like "linux binaries to be released XX/XX/2002" would be very
appreciated.
Anyone have any news on this subject? Rumors? Speculation? I hate
rebooting into windows just to use the 3.5 beta ;)

This problem has been addressed several times in
povray.beta-test.
Several of the people that have access to the source
code of POV-Ray 3.5 have successfully managed to compile
and run it. I think Warp is one of them. But right now,
the Team lacks a Linux/Unix specialist that could properly
test the binary and create the install scripts, etc.

Thorsten Froehlich is a Mac specialist. So there's a
Mac beta. Chris Cason is a Windows specialist. So
there's a Windows beta.

Nobody can work on the Linux version, so no release
date can be announced. And besides, the POV-Team
never announces release dates.

Go read povray.beta-test.

Actually, we have one, but he's been dealing with more important
issues lately. I've been keeping the source working and doing
tests, but I'm not really qualified to make an installer for it
all, so we're hoping that now that our Linux guy has more time
maybe we can get something out.

Well, I'm working on the Linux version. I just don't have anything
that can be installed on Joe Random's Linux machine.

Thanks Ron! I wish I knew more about linux so I could volunteer my
free time but I'm still pretty much a newbie. PLEASE don't be a stranger
to this end of the newsgroups... POV-ray's nix users need you :)

Yes, this question is asked more than once a week in one for or the other.
So pick any of the answers there: It is ready when it is ready, no
speculating or asking will change anything but waste your and our time.

Then perhaps it WOULD be a good idea to post the summarization of these
responses on the http://www.povray.org page to prevent such wastes of
time (and newsgroup space) in the future? Underneath the "Download a
public beta..." link there might be another link something like "POVray
3.5 for linux????"
I think most nix povray users simply want to know why a port of our
favorite raytracer that does not require a working GUI has not become
available yet, even in a beta form. Or more so, many (like myself) would
find even the information that a linux port IS being worked on quite
reassuring.
Thanks for your hard work on POV, your time and somewhat redundant
responses.
Waiting,
Jon Hoskins
aka October

Would it work if you just distributed the compiled binary? Just make a zip
with the compiled executable file and that's it. The extra stuff (includes,
scenes) could be zipped and distributed in a separate packet. The docs can be
found in the web, I think.
I can provide a Sparc-Solaris binary (although I can't assure that it will
work in another system if it has a different set of .so files...).

I could, but apparently some anthropologists in deepest Africa have
happened upon rumors that Mark Gordon might still be alive and living
with a family of chimpanzees somewhere near the Olduvai Gorge, or
something like that. Anyway, he seems to be alive and well and I'm
deferring to him as our Linux guy to decide what's to be done.

Wow, progress! It's just nice to even read the _suggestion_ that something
might become available.
Yes, there is already full documentation of 3.5 on the web and Christoph
Hormann did an excellent job porting the full win32 menus (with
pictures!) into a 2.5mb html document:
http://www.schunter.etc.tu-bs.de/~chris/imenu/insert_menu.html
A binary, a short shell script that opens vim (or editor of
choice), povfront and a browser full of locally accessed html (compliments
of Christoph) and linux users can be poving with 3.5!
Currently I run Mandrake 8.1 on an Intel platform. I'm not a linux-guru
by a long shot but if I can assist in getting some nix binaries available
in _ANY_ way please let me know. My work is seasonal and I have a few
months of free time just waiting for some sort of project. :)
Best,
Jon Hoskins

Email me. I need Linux pre-beta testers.
