I was thinking about uv-mapping a model I've done using Silo, and thus I
searched for a free software that could create and edit uv-maps of .obj
files. Apparently, the tool of choice for that is UV-Mapper classic, but
I cannot find it anymore. Seems it has been replaced with UV-Mapper
professionnal, which unfortunately, is not free...
Any ideas as to where I could find something equivalent and free ? Or am
I doomed to spend some $$ ?

Yes, but just for Mac, isn't it ? I have just a Windows and a Linux at
hand... The demo is very attractive but save is disabled.
REMapper Cannot alter the mapping from what I can see.

Sorry, I just very recently got working uv-mappers from these links.
Here's another one, LithUnwrap v1.3:

That's a surprise! It was there quite recently, difficult to find, but
there. Anyway the "Classic" version was good but lacked the "zoom"
capability which is awkword to work without and so makes "Pro" worth the $.

So you want a free software on Windows or Linux, to create & edit UV-maps of
.obj files ?
There is maybe another solution, you can try Wings 3D, he can read and write
.obj files.
http://www.wings3d.com/
Here is a little tutorial about UV texturing with Wings3D.
http://www.beatgroover.com/aoi/tute/
Once the mapping done, you can use Poseray and output the right files to
POV-ray
