  Self-referential is nothing. If you want a real challenge, try making
a povray code which renders itself (ie. the source code itself).
  (You can use timrom.ttf for that.)

I did that in C once, but I shudder to think what it would look like in
POV.

  There are countless ways of doing it in C, others are more complicated
than others, but due to the flexibility of the program, it can actually
be done in a rather simple way. This is the shortest self-printing C program
I have ever seen:

main(){char*s="main(){char*s=%c%s%c;printf(s,34,s,34);}";printf(s,34,s,34);}

  However, it's probably a lot more complicated to do it with POV-Ray.

Gary Thompson's quine page has an example that uses #debug to output itself
to the message window.
http://www.nyx.net/~gthompso/self_pov.txt

Here's the code for it:

#declare e="#declare e=#debug
concat(substr(e,1,11),chr(34),e,chr(34),substr(e,12,71))box{x y}"
#debug concat(substr(e,1,11),chr(34),e,chr(34),substr(e,12,71))box{x y}
