I will post this here and in the other programming newsgroup as I am not
sure which one gets more response and there is at this time only one message
in each of them.

I am looking for someone who has knowledge with regard to Linux and the
internal parsing of POV scenefiles prior to going to the tracer and want to
know if there is an implementation of POV for Linux that has only the tracer
in it.

I want to parse a scene file and then output the parsed parts to multiple
tracers as in the case of animation instead of each frame being genned by
the parser and then sent to the tracer I would like to parse the file and
send thirty frames to thirty tracers so i can produce thirty frames at once.

I could of course write a macro to handle all this in linux as I am sure
there is a variant of POV (from the early days) that would split a render
into parts. so that each part could be output as a TGA and then the lot
could be matched together in a graphics editor. That of course is the
tedious way and I am not adverse to asking for help when i need to.

Anybody ?

TIA

Take a look at the source code. Really! There cannot be such a thing in
the current design. What you are looking or sounds like you assume there is
some kind of intermediate format (unless you consider token sequences an
intermediate format), which makes sense for a compiler, but not a scene
description parser.

That will not save much time. You will still need to parse the scene files
for every frame. Use the standard POV-Ray with an external animation
controller. Here are some:

Or a patched version of POV-Ray:

This is external animation controller more than patched version and not much for
Linux (iirc written in Power Basic which is not available for Linux)
thought worth of listing for complete list of available "renderfarms"

Oops.

A couple of the others were windows only too. It was just to show some
things that people have already done.

Maybe there should be a subsection just for renderfarms on the pov site in
the resources area? There are a few more out there. I did not have the
links handy at the time. Buckosoft BSAC comes to mind.

I do apologise and would like to thank those who replied YES indeedy I was
thinking in terms of a linux renderfarm based on a stonesoup cluster. Trying
to get a serious 3d animation shop going without it costing the earth, the
moon and all the stars.

Thx

Have you considered alternatives such as using commercial animation software
and then outsourcing your rendering? You could get a copy of e.g., Maya
Complete (since you specifically mentioned linux) or perhaps Lightwave or
3dStudio if you feel like fighting WINE, for about the cost of a render node
and not spend time or money building your render farm at all; simply hook up
with a company dedicated to render farming and spend your time building
content instead of computers.

I'll grant that I'm a little biased seeing as how I have a huge render farm
for rent... But, if you were making a traditional film, would you build your
own film lab, or find a company that specializes in developing film?
