Just saw this on another newsgroup. Unfortunately I don't have the time or
skill to implement this, but wouldn't it be cool....

"Shave and a Haircut" is an advanced modeling, dynamics, and rendering
package for the creation of computer animated hair and high detail
procedural systems.
Sample programs include a Renderman 'run program' procedurals as well as a
standalone shave render.
The OpenShaveSDK is a library which you compile directly into your program.
It contains all components of Shave, except the GUI. This includes dynamics,
hair generation engine, rendering, fileIO, and memory management as well as
various helper functions. As long as you don't mind using the shave GUI to
manipulate guides, this is everything you need.
Because many things like weightmaps and texture are managed in the Shave
GUI, this library is very simple to integrate into any host application.
The OpenShaveSDK is free, however you may not distribute it any in form, or
embed it in an application that's going to get sold somewhere without
explicitly arranging for a distribution agreement. These offers are
extended only to trusted developers who have proven track records on the
target platform. Source Forge, or OpenSource project licenses are available,
so long as they don't undermine development deals existing here. (ie - an
OpenSource implementation of the shavelib as a StudioMax plug would be
forbidden, as we wouldn't want it to undermine sales for developers who have
already invested effort into a Max port, but an OpenSource effort for
'Blender' or 'Hash3d' for instance, would be fine so long as you checked
with us first).
Use of the "Shave and a Haircut" trademark in advertising is subject to
explicit written permission from Joseph Alter, Inc.
The OpenShaveSDK/Core Edition also includes all guide manipulation level
components (everything you need to embed everything the ShaveGUI has to
offer inside an app). These components are not covered here, as they are
covered by agreements through November 2002 with Avid/Softimage. They are
available for non-completive licenses (Meaning, you're not a competitor of
Avid/Softimage; ie - you're an in-house production software developer, or
you make rendering products) and are available for competitive sub-licensing
after November 2002. The core API isn't free and is very complex.
If you launch the shave.exe and no menus appear on the left, and there is a
sequence of numbers in the lower left corner, this means you don't have a
key for the GUI. As I've said, the SDK libraries are free, the GUI is not.
Available Platforms for SDK include : Windows, Irix, PC Linux, Mac
w/carbonlib or Mac OSX.
The ShaveGUI is available for : Windows, Mac w/carbonlib or OSX
Production specific consulting and custom lib development is available.

Actually I probably should have posted this in p.u.p. My impression is that
the pov team is very picky about the legal arrangements of pov-ray (and I
think they should be!) and would be unlikely to inlcude a 3rd party addition
to the package. Not out of scope for an unofficial patch, though.
