The documentation makes reference to Persistent Variables, is there any
chance of this feature in future versions

You can use the file input and output feature to keep data from one scene to
another.  If you are not sure on how to use the file input and output the
best place to ask is povray.general or povray.newusers as this group is for
discussing the POV-Ray source code.
