Okay, it would be fun to get to the bottom of the mystery, but aren't almost all
of those in effect plug-ins, or something other than a major rendering engine?

nope, ZBrush and 3D Coat are the premiere modelling programs for highly detailed
meshes these days and VRay and Maxwell are the premiere modern rendering
engines.

Thanks!  The story arc closes with the finding that Vray and Maxwell took away
market share from 3DS Max.
