Marketing, I think.
Some are hosting very popular and *sometimes* appreciated.

Reason found. I did not know that there are two (for me) geocities sites.
http://www.geocities.com/ and http://uk.geocities.com/
Well, well, well and I found two old animations from 2003 and 2004 that I
thought I had lost. One of them a game of bagatelle using Rune's Particle
system.
I think that I will consolidate everything when I find a new site.
Phew!

What do you plan to host?

Google App Engine may serve you...

If you have little requirements, consider Nearly Free Speech. They're
*very* cheap if you don't really do much with it, and since they are
technically getting paid for it, they guarantee good service. I've heard
it recommended very often.

	From their FAQ:

"""How much does the average site really cost?

During the month of July, 2008:

    * 27% of our members incurred no hosting costs at all.
    * 53% of our members incurred hosting costs totaling between $0.01
and $1.00, inclusive.
    * The bandwidth cost of the average site was $0.10.
    * The storage cost of the average site was $0.29.
    * The average member had 2.2 web sites hosted with us. (But none of
our members are average!)

("Hosting costs" include charges for bandwidth, storage, and MySQL.)

For the bandwidth and storage averages, the top 1% consume a very
disproportionate amount; if they are excluded, the average falls to
$0.02 for bandwidth and $0.09 for storage."""

Bandwidth is relatively cheap with them, but storage isn't. However, if
you want more storage, I suggest using NearlyFreeSpeech in conjunction
with Amazon S3, which provides gobs of really cheap space.

Just some files that I can link to. I don't intend building a webpage.

Thanks for your suggestions Nearly Free Speech looks interesting.

While it's not free, Amazon's S3 service is exceptionally cheap, assuming
you have a credit card they'll take to start with. I run about $0.25/month
(as in, less than a dollar, yes).

s3fox extension makes it easy.

LOL, phew indeed! It's cool that you found your animations again!

Yes, get the lot onto one host somewhere and back up the files to a
flashdrive/whatever etc.

Oh, that definately doesn't sound good for them. :/

They have the space, no doubt about that, but I guess the cost of
running something free actually costs lots now...

I would recommend my ISP, Tiscali, but even though I have never had a
problem internet-wise, they are like Google: hard to contact. Well, unless I
give you the email that I have, that is... ;)

Yes, they have been slowly running down their services over the past few years.

I'll definitely consider that when I'm a bit more settled.
