Far from being perfect, but I have obtained pretty good results with 
rayleigh scattering and exponential density (I added a flare with the 
Gimp just to get closer ;-) )...

It's funny how fragile the atmosphere looks from that perspective.  When 
you look up at the sky from Earth, it all looks so immense.  When you
look at it from outer space, as in that picture, it looks like just a 
very thin layer.  Eerie.
