My wife bought a netbook with WinXP Home edition, SP3. She found that for
various reasons, she absolutely needed WinXP Professional. She bought a CD for
that from a reputable dealer off the internet.

While attempting to upgrade, the software says that because the existing OS is
of a higher version (SP3, I presume) than that on the CD, it will not allow her
to proceed with an upgrade. So she was considering proceeding with an "install".

She had already spent some time installing programs on the new box and is not
keen to lose it all.

Any tips on how to make this work without risk to the existing installation
(stuff besides the OS, per se) ?

Reinstalling the apps will be less work than trying to keep them going
during a replacement of the OS.

Even though I agree with John (clean install is always a win), you could
try slipstreaming SP3 to XpPro disc.

Okay, thanks all for the advice. XP Home just doesn't cut it for some enterprise
situations.
