I think it's a different perspective. After taking a seminar on well,
"new media" in my undergrad, the most important lesson I learned was
never to consider any photo as real - even one I know I took.
While that's extreme, I can understand someone being skeptical of any
photograph he/she didn't take. As you pointed out, it can be _really_
hard to tell if a well processed photo is a fake. This was true even
before you had digital imaging. So photos shouldn't really be relied
upon as evidence. IOW, all photos are fake unless I really trust the guy
who took the photo.
It's (one) reason why I ignore photographs in political news.

Photoshopped or not, it's very kitsch.

We will have to wait until the google 360 picture car has been there.
They have been at my street, my house is on the web. Not sure if I like
it or not.

That would merely prove that the object exists there. Doesn't mean this
specific photo is real. ;-)

Yeah, my first thought was to look using Street View, but alas it hasn't
been there yet.
Anyone here live in the area?

Well, it'd be a bit of a challenge to edit the object out of the photo
and then add a fake version back in - probably more effort than it's
worth for even the most dedicated photoshopper. ;-)

Uh, how long as that thing been there? Maybe they just photoed it before
the metalwork was erected. :-P

Maybe, but then it becomes a case of life imitating art. :-P

Maybe they took a photo of the place before the statue was put there,
and after the statue was erected, they went and photographed the statue
and then copy-pasted it on the original photo.
At least the lighting of the statue should be rather accurate.
