Dunno. I come home, and wife says "There's some weird message on your
computer."
Some IO error with some boot file. Can't be good. Power down, power up.
Same error. Not good at all.
Vista CD in drive, boot with command prompt. Locks on "drive.sys or
disk.sys" Bad... Reboot again, and BIOS reports "SMART Status bad for
Primary Master. Backup and Replace"
No kidding. WTF good is early warning when it happens AFTER THE FACT? :/
Drive doesn't make any weird grindy noises .. so maybe controller
failure? The drive was just a month short of 5 years old. The motor
probably died.

Is it a SATA drive? Check that the cable is ok.
Those damned SATA cables get loose too easily. It has scared me a couple
of times.

Nope. Good old fashioned Parallel ATA. The new one is SATA though. I can
understand how they'd work themselves loose.

Well, the PATA connectors almost need power tools to remove. The SATA
connectors are much looser.

I replaced a Hitachi "Deathstar" with a seagate barracuda. Two of them
actually, and they nearly managed to both fail at the same time in a RAID 1.
Why the seagate? Because at the time seagate has a reputation of making the
best drives. Really can't trust any manufacturer these days.

I recently had to return a Western Digital HD that only lived a single month...
sudden death of the drive electronics I guess. The BIOS still found the drive,
but wasn't even able to identify it.
