I would have thought there are a lot of families where the "dad" is the only
one to manage it.

Well let me put it this way: During the course of my entire life,
everybody I have known has owned cars which are at least 20 years old.
When my dad bought a brand new car, it was the first time I'd never been
in a car that was new.
(My mum's car is ancient, and mine's not especially new.)
