You insist on living in a place where there aren't enough people to find
good friends, for one thing.

You can't be friends with everyone. Thus, you need a wide selection of
acquaintances to choose friends from.

This is not that unusual, unless you're saying you don't even talk to
(say) people at work or in your house.

It's not so much because they're diodes as it is because they're quantum
semiconductors, actually. Vacuum tube diodes don't work this way, for
example.

You have to apply enough voltage to push the electrons on the N side
past the depletion zone in the middle, after which you've filled up all
the holes and away you go.

You're kidding :/ I first encountered it on slashdot. At work of all
places...

I don't read the comments section slashdot anymore.

I think roughly speaking a BSc qualifies you to get a MSc and that will
be enough to get a PhD position. At least in the Netherlands I think a
BSc is not enough to become a PhD student.

I think Gilles run out of inspiration we are still at #95 :(
pity, some were very good.

It was revoked long ago when he showed he didn't know who Stallman or
Jobs was, nor Valve software. ;)

I'm fairly sure Firefox *supports* it, but I still don't know what it
*is*. :-P

Are you kidding? *All* of the games I play are from Valve! :-P

It was... actually no, I don't remember which developer it was, but the
guys behind WoW or some other huge-name game like that.

Sounds about right.

My sister has an MSc in Chemistry. And now she's an accountant...?
