Until google bought them, it was a, well, sales force utility suite. The
sort of thing that tells you when the customer is likely to run out of
what you ordered, what their number is, who's in charge, etc.
Imagine if you're (say) a company selling auto parts to garages, or a
company selling copier machines to businesses. You have thousands of
customers, dozens of salesmen, all kinds of schedules, etc. Imagine
Outlook extended into dealing the the customers as well as internal
corporate stuff. Now, run it over the web. That's what salesforce.com was.
