I don't have time to go buy a commercial AV program. Any suggestions
would be highly appreciated!

Another online scanner is http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
And add a second vote for AVG as a resident anti-virus.

Pretty funny how they say "you don't have to install anything, you just need
a web browser", and then it says you must be using IE (that's not just "a
web browser", that's "*that* specific browser") in order to *install* their
ActiveX control...

McAfee have a free tool called "Stinger" that will scan for and remove a
selection of "high prevelance" viruses. (It does NOT detect or remove
all of the viruses in their catalogue - for that you must buy the
commercial product.)
It can be found here:

This is what I've been using. Funny this post should show up. Yesterday I
was looking for a walk through for a game that I had not been able to get
any further. I Googled and after looking over the list I went to a site. It
had a list of links. I chose one and it right away stated with this "you
have been infected" and threw up a fairly convincing MS Security Center
dialog. I immediately closed the browser and ran my local copy of stinger
that said I was OK. For some reason I still didn't comfortable, so I decided
to give MS Live One Care. Sheesh what a long download (dial up) well that
scan gave me a clean bill of health. Wondering if that loosely describes
Sam's notion that his system has become infected. BTW: that's my first time
EVER that I though my system has been compromised.

Me too (yesterday) but I've seen it before and didn't believe it. I've got
confidence in AVG and its Resident Shield. That program has caught quite a few
nasties in its time even as they are being downloaded.

I didn't believe it at first as I've seen these types of things before, but
for some reason my instincts thought otherwise .... better safe than sorry
right?
