Is there an easy way to find out whether a given prefix is taken? When
submitting something to the collection, it would be nice to know beforehand
that my unique prefix truly is "unique."

Yes:
o Log in and go into the submission screen. Leave 'New' selected (the
default).
o Type your chosen prefix into the prefix field.
o Move the cursor into another field.

As soon as you move your cursor to another field, it'll check with the
server to see whether that prefix has already been used. You don't need to
fill in any other fields. It'll display an alert immediately (within a
couple of seconds) if it's already been used as a prefix. It'll also display
an alert if it's been used as a contribution name.

You can check this out by using the prefix 'NB' which is used for the
Netball object or by using the name 'Netball'. The Contribution Name field
also checks both, so can be used in the same way.

Regards,
Chris B.
