I'm fully with you not being an artist. However, while CSG is
great for us, it's not magic and can't completely replace our
lack of talent when it comes to organic shapes ;) Therefore,
it is rare to see a scene which contains an animal or even
a human where that object hasn't been designed in a modeller
and imported as a mesh. Still, space shuttle should be ok,
just get blueprints and model away:

For organic shapes you might look at the blob object. It's not
very exact modelling but sometimes useful. The good thing about
SDL is you can do a lot of trial an error without worrying
about doing irreparable damage ;)

Also, here is a modeller which is fun to use even for non-artists,
it is based on a technology originally designed for children:
