models to POV mesh? I haven't been able to find anything.

Hi,
try quick3d (shareware - http://www.quick3d.com/).
Within the test period you can translate from ply to obj or 3ds (don't
remember) for free and then as usual with Poseray to pov formate.

i'm looking to snag convert the Happy Buddha.
does anyone have it converted already?
or have a good sources for other .ply objects?
or ... can explain the format of .ply and how
it differs from other meshes?

A POV-Ray user called Mael did it IIRC. You can probably retrieve his email
from his messages in povray.unofficial.patches (among other groups) and ask
him directly.
