i have the idea of making a picture of something i saw once, i nearly 
rode my bike into the kerb.

problem - i have plans for the objects including cross-sections at 
positions with length.

similar to the plans for a sail boat, profiling the ships hull,

now i'm fairly sure, i can digitse the cross-sections giving me the 
start of mesh.

any suggestions for help with proceeding ?
maybe the author of that rather nice US Brig?

suggestions as programs (linux) having maybe csv import of the (x,y) 
coordinates at each cross section points with the offset providing z,
that also can export back to povray ?

Steven,

I used Hamapatch to create the Brig's hull. I took the measurements off the
plans & entered them as coordinates for the patches.

For the ships boats, I am trying a new method. I scanned the plans in and
imported them into the background for Lightwave. I then build the frames
for the boats right on top of the plans in a seperate layer.

Not sure that will help.

looks like archelogical(sp?) dig time - where's vmware gone - long long 
time ago.
was hoping not to have to.


would each cross-section have to have the same no of points digitised ?

ah, oh well - linux here, no windows is preferred environment
but i found something called engauge on sourceforge, which seems
likely to do what i want in terms of digitizing.

please tell you can vary the number of points on a particular 'frame'/
cross-section in a mesh. i can't see why not though.

mine's going to be looking remarkably cylindrical at each end and 
somewhat rounded in the middle.
once i figure the syntax :-)
