I'm looking for something that will render fairly quickly (this is for an
animation) and I was wondering if there is a good way to model carpet?
The view would not be a close-up.  More like about from standing height
looking down.

You can use an image_map or any types of procedural texture. You should
consider layering the textures to create an effect of wear and tear. A noisy
pattern for the normal map may do OK.

Which other properties of a carpet do you wish to include? Squishiness?

I will try an image map.  To be honest, I'm not very good with textures,
etc.
I struggled getting some wood grain scaled right and then running in the
right direction.

I can't recall how fast it was, presumably slower than a textured primitive,
but i once used Gilles' grass macro to make a carpet. i applied a few
textures to the result and it looked like a reasonable shag carpet. it did
have some undesirable moire effects if i remember correctly, but that could
have been fixed with some additional layers of "grass". i didn't play too
much with it, i was just messing around with the macro at the time.
