I suppose what you are referring to is applying physical texturing to the
surface of an object. While this is possible with HFs it has limited
applications due in part to the general flatness of HFs themselves. They
can be great for adding cracks or roughness to flat objects, if you have
a basic understanding of how HFs are created, but a certain creativity is
necessary to pull it off and without special skills applying them to anything
other than a flat surface is difficult at best. Probably a more realistic
approach these days would be to use the isosurfaces available in POV-Ray
v3.5. This new feature offers greater flexibility. Might want to check out
one of iso tutorials listed at povray.org. For example -

Also search some of the groups on this server for other isosurface discussions
and isosurface examples.
