Maybe I'm just a bit tired now, but I can't seem to find a way to copy some
text out of the message window in the windows version. Is this a feature, or
am I missing something?

When you have the message window open go to edit -> copy_pane and it will
copy the visible portion of the message window that can be then be pasted.
It will not copy anything off screen.
