I have POV 3.1g for Win 95 and am trying to render a heightfield which
is a 16 color GIF. My code for it is:
height_field {gif "d:\progra~1\POV-ray\a-images\aztec1.gif"
scale <4,4,4>
translate <-2,2,0>
}
But it just renders as a black rectangle. The first half of the colors
in the GIF are shades of "black" (i.e. real close to black). Do I need
to vary my colors in the color palette? Some of my colors are non-black,
but how come I don't see any sign of those? I also have 2 light sources
to make sure I see the surface of the object.
BTW, my picture is a picture of several aztec glyphs. And I used Paint
Shop Pro 3.11 (for win 3.1) to save the GIF to 16 colors.

Give your Hf a texture or colour, but beyond that it's hard to
tell without seeing all of your code.

Not too many responses about this. I gave a 16 color gif a try and it
does have height although not obvious if the colors are near to black.
Unless white, or nearer to white, is in the gif the HF is going to be
fairly flat.

You haven't given the h-f a texture or colour. The gif may have a colour
but I don't think these are used for the h-f object.

Any h-f that has not been given a pigment will not show.
Try this: pigment { gradient y color_map { [ 0 rgb .1][1 rgb 1]}}
This will at least let you see the shape of your h-f.
