I have POV 3.1g for Win 95 and am trying to render a heightfield which
is a 16 color GIF. My code for it is:
height_field {gif "d:\progra~1\POV-ray\a-images\aztec1.gif"
  scale <4,4,4>
  translate <-2,2,0>

  }

But it just renders as a black rectangle. The first half of the colors
in the GIF are shades of "black" (i.e. real close to black). Do I need
to vary my colors in the color palette? Some of my colors are non-black,
but how come I don't see any sign of those? I also have 2 light sources
to make sure I see the surface of the object.

BTW, my picture is a picture of several aztec glyphs.

You need to supply a texture for your heightfield. You will probably
need an image_map pigment.
