This should perhaps go to o-t, but as an NT user, do you have also a process
running called 'Liccheck.exe' that slowly, with time, is taking up more and
more memory? At present it claims more than 19000 kB and it can't be
closed... What is it, What does it, do you know?

Two reasons:
1. NT is a LOT more expensive than win98.
2. I think that most games do not work in NT.

NT? No Thanks! The one and only time I had that beast on my machine it
successfully killed more than a month's work in terms of term
projects, lab reports, etc. I am not installing this thing on my life!

No, I don't. Are you running NT server?

Sounds like License Check to me. But I don't know, what it is.

Right. But it's worth it.

Do you think, by any chance, that I play games with an
200 MMX (apart from playing Galaga with Mame32...)?
I don't even have a 3D Graphics card (I own a
Spea Mirage P64 PCI).

Huh? I installed NT (I think) three years ago, after my Win95 had
destroyed itself for the umpteenth time. I did _one_ (1!) reinstall
during that period.

I just said why I don't use NT.

For no apparent reason NT started believing it was a remote
installation or something and kept trying to connect to itself. The
result was that it took 30 min to display the logon screen, then about
2 minutes for each icon on the desktop, another 15 min. after
ctrl-alt-del to display the task manager, and it took it ~10 more
minutes after I tried to close the network server to inform me that
"The server is too busy to complete the requested task". For obvious
reasons I had to reformat the hard drive (my BIOS did not support
CD-Rom boot) and lose all work from the last month or so. I did not
lose any POV or 2D artwork because this happened at the end of the
semester and I was too busy with school work, but I did lose all term
projects, lab reports etc. for that semester. Cost me a week of
insomnia (a total of ~10 hr of sleep in 7 days) and an an arhythmia as
a result from that. Windows NT? No Thanks.

Well, the license fee is a factor for some. Another big reason is that
it is such a resource hog. For me, it's just not stable enought for
multimedia work. I used to have a dual 333 at work with NT 4, and if I'd
push the video too much (Java 2, MPEG playback, etc.) it would instantly
freeze the machine without even a BSOD. Plus I'd have to reboot every
few days to reclaim memory. Plus that NTFS once it gets fragmented will
start eating up the HD space for it's replacement for the FAT (forget
what it was called off hand). And the HD became even too fragmented to
defragment...
If you get a good NT configuration, all is well. But if not...
With Linux, my one box here at home had a 180 day uptime. Yes, that's
half a year. And the only reason it came down was becuase we had a short
blackout here and I don't have it on a UPS.
At work I've had to shut down Linux and/or Sun workstations to move
them. That's about it. My NT boxes on the other hand...
Anyway, that was all to answer your question of why I'm not running NT.
