I did everything right (I think) in the README.linux. But when I run
x-povray it gives me this:
error in loading shared libraries: libpng.so.2 cannot open shared object
file: No such file or dir
Please help

You should probably ask in the povray.unix group, but I can at least
give you a hint... make sure you've run 'make install' on libz and
libpng. If you didn't build your own version, there may be some other
procedure for getting the shared libraries installed in the correct
place. If so, and if it's not mentioned in the docs, then that's
probably a bug in the documentation.

Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 (which Peter is using, per personal communication)
installs libpng.so.1. Currently, running POV-Ray requies libpng.so.2.
I'll see what I can do to make future versions more flexible. In the
meantime, you may need to update your libpng and your zlib in order to
use PNG files. If you have any questions on how to do that, let me
know. If I get enough demand in the near future, I'll throw together
either a FAQ or a script. So far as I know, this problem is only found
in Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 (and probably earlier), but it may also be
present in other distributions.
Now to look into that Debian problem that's been reported...

Interesting you should mention that. I'm running col 2.2 too, but I never
noticed because I just assumed there wasn't already a libpng and I was already
building my version from the source.

I did the same (on some older Linux), but now:
(a): xv, pnmtopng and other programs have trouble with the
new libpng
(b): the PNGs created by povray cannot be read by some older
programs (maybe the PNG format itself supported by libpng2
is more general).
Probably one should recompile the other stuff as well.
