to follow up on this story:
On the <http://megapov.inetart.net/povrayunofficial_mac/alphapov.html>
web page, i downloaded the source for
"PovRayUnofficial_3.8.0-alpha.10013324-avx" XCode 10 project (XCode is a
standard IDE).
The last update to this page was on January 15, 2019, which is quite
some time ago but the project for POVRay has the same structure.
I have included a screenshot of a project window. It clearly shows the
libraries used: zlib, tiff,... and openexr. We can therefore assume that
OpenEXR is supported.
I tried to compile the project as is, but I got miles of errors, and to
make matters worse, the project is version 10, while we are on version 16.
There are a lot of corrections to be made just to adapt the project, and
I'm not at all comfortable with all of this.
There are compilation errors in the _stdio.h file, which is part of the
original SDK. I have a feeling this is going to be complicated.

fwiw, not a useful choice. as I recall, clipka abandoned ("rolled back" from)
the alphas past 9945627.

EXR has been implemented; all features of the official version have
been implemented, and the file format can be selected in the output
pop-up.
However, due to a small error in the project, EXR does not work as expected.
I will make a new version available in one of the coming days in which
it works properly, for both the 3.8 version and the 3.7 version.
I just need to make sure that everything works on at least Ventura.
Moreover, I am no longer actively working on my version of POV-Ray for
Mac, although I do try to keep the project up to date.
I will post a message as soon as they are available.
Please use only the website https://povrayunofficial.wordpress.com.
The site http://megapov.inetart.net/povrayunofficial_mac/ is outdated,
but I am unable to remove it. The person who made it available for us
can no longer be reached, and my password is no longer active :-(.
To avoid any misunderstandings: for my version of POV-Ray, no libraries
(OpenEXR, Boost, etc.) need to be installed on your Mac. All required
files are included in the project and in POV-Ray itself.
