Hi,
I want to images that slice through my object. I figure that the easiest way to
do this is to vary the minimum distance at which a surface is rendered. Is there
a way to do this in POV-Ray?

I'm not sure about the minimum rendering distance, but a fairly easy way of
getting a cross-sectional view is to create an *intersection* of your object and
a *box* than encloses the part you want to view.

Also, it occurs to me that if you rendered only the portion of an object a given
distance from the camera, the resulting surface would be curved (spherical).
If, for some reason, that is what you wanted, you could just create the
*difference* of your object and a sphere centered at the camera location.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Mike C.
