I want to wrap a rectangular sheet, say a sheet of paper, onto an elliptical
cylinder, where the cylinder's generatrix is not parallel to a side of the
rectangle.
And of course I have no idea where to start (otherwise I wouldn't be here :-))
Any ideaz?
TIA
Steven

to begin ?
Cylinder is a ruled surface, but the sheet must be parallel to the generatrix (as the
generatrix is also ruled). You have no choice.
Therefore, your original sheet can only be rotated in its plane. that plane must
intersect
the cylinder along a generatrix, and its only a matter of wrapping/applying the sheet
on
the cylinder, from that line.

You can consider your rotated sheet as a rotated rectangle on a bigger "normal"
rectangle
( bounding rectangle), if it can help you to decompose the solution.

Notice: as ruled surface, the same can be applied to cone.
You cannot wrap a sphere.
