I have modeled a room which has a window. What is a typical method to represent
a scene through the window. I'm thinking of a forest or a city and it won't be
raytraced, just something like a bitmap. It will be distant. Should I place a
bitmap on a box that the view from the window covers? Any tips?

Image on a box is the way to go. Give it

finish
{
    ambient 1
    diffuse 0
}

and it will ignore light sources and be fully bright.

For a perfect look even in reflections, a HDR bitmap projected onto a sky sphere
(or a large enough regular sphere with ambient if you need more control over
brightness) is the best thing. Look on the internet for "HDR light probe" (the
"classic" ones are those from http://www.debevec.org/probes/, but there are
other free good ones out there as well; make sure to really go for HDR, light
probes produced by hobbyists are often low-dynamic-range shots which will work
poorly with dim reflections)
