They're not actually rings, but discs.

That's a light effect however (shock fronts in the still burning fuel/air mix),
and not related to the ordinary heated-air blur effect.

The actual heated-air blur should actually extend rather cylindrical, or
actually even taper out a bit (while reducing in blurriness)
