I have a wish list item. It would be nice to have the option when rendering
partial images to have povray output both files with the image size
information set to the size of the sub part and files where zero's have
filled out the "empty" parts of the image. An ini file/commandline option
to tell povray how to save the file.

It is not likely that this will be implemented for reasons already 
explained quite often.

I wrote a shell script for the POVCOMP doing this as post processing for 
a partial PPM image:

From the past post it sounds like this option is not an impossible task but
an unwilling task. And for a feature to be used in the povcomp rules that
by one of the creators of the program is only to be used for continuing a
render seems to smack contradiction. Either we as users have a need for
uncorrupted partial output from povray or we do not.

Let's put it like this: it has been considered, but the technical
implications are beyond reasonable. After all, the output isn't corrupted,
it's merely on the wrong horizontal line, and you'd have to cut'n'paste it
at some point anyhow. The Output-Files have all kinds of rules that need to
be handled, and though I've got no clue about it all whatsoever, I trust the
POV-Team who have more insight.

Many image formats support telling in their header the canvas size as
well as the image size and offset.
  The canvas size can be bigger than the image size, meaning that the
image data in fact contains only a part of the whole image.
  Programs will always be able to read correctly such an image (I suppose
some programs simply ignore the size of the canvas and image offset given
in the header, while others create an image of the size of the canvas and
draw the image data in the proper offset inside it).

  It might be a good idea to make POV-Ray save partial renders in this way.
