You're developing a killer module for the Object Collection, and you
discover an oversight in one of your macros. You repair the oversight,
but it needs testing, so you write a test scene. The colors are not right.

You rack your brain over the macro. You stare at #debug output and GIMP
samples. You convert back and forth between linear and sRGB. You
compare the macro with a successful proof-of-concept you wrote two
months earlier. You start to wonder if you have some grave
misunderstanding of how POV-Ray works. You divide by the finish diffuse
to see if that's interfering, but the numbers still don't match up. You
run a case using just gray scales, and discover that the diffuse value
/couldn't/ be the problem. Everything checks out in the SDL, but the
image is still wrong!

After several hours of this, you discover that the bug is in test scene
itself!

Oy, vey.

Rikki Tikki Tavi
Saw a tempting tail
The colors drove him mad
And so he switched to grayscale
Round and round he chased his prey
That furry lure did bob and sway
Because the macro Rikki wrote
Required he fix a tiny mote
His debug quests were never lazy
But this one nearly drove him crazy
But finally his search did glean
The error lay in his own scene!

try forgetting something you /used/ to know only to remember it when
someone (whose helping you work through the issue) says something that
fires the correct synapse. time for a bourbon and a smoke i was done for
the evening.

Reminds me of a lot of political activism. How do you fix (i.e. debug)
the world's/society's problems?
