Hello,
I would like to invite interested Povray enthusiasts to work together with
me. Our focus is to create Roman galleys in Povray.
Your part would be the hulk (we provide all neccessary information and
sketches and illustration) while I would be responsible for the deck
constructions (such as towers, platforms and masts). I am unable to do the
ship hulks or wind-blown sails on my own as I don't know how to use 3D
editors (I write scene files by hand). However, I easily can do the other
parts. And I have the maritime archaeological expertise for this project.
Anyone who would like to work together with me? More details on request.
E-mails can be sent to Inf### [at] TerraRomanaorg.
Greetings,
Sven

Why not use Free!Ship, a CAD program for designing ship's hulls. It is
very easy to use, and there is a library of over 100 ship hulls already
designed. All you need to do is download the program, a hull which
matchs what you want, and you tweak from there.
Free!Ship:
http://www.freeship.org/
Pre-designed hulls:
http://freeship.sourceforge.net/download.html
(to see a complete list do a search with nothing in the search boxes).
Once you've tweaked your hull, export as a obj or dxf file, convert to a
pov mesh2 file with poseray and you good to go!
Bryan

True!
That sounds quite interesting. Thanks for that tip, I will check it out
right now. Please check back for my feedback.

Hi Bryan,
I downloaded, so far, that program. Sounds very promising, but I recognize
already a limitation: no Povray scene file import/export. And that means
that i might now have to look for some conversion program capable to convert
between 3D scene files. Do you know one?
Otherwise, that link is still a very good and useful one. But I have not
seen yet any ship that can fit my requirements. That is why I posted here,
because I truly need someone who can takeover the entire hulk. Not just
outside but also inside. And carved decorations and accessories.
My name is Sven Littkowski, I am the lead programmer of the Forum Navis
Romana, a Terra Romana Project.

Greetings again!
The programs mentioned in this thread by Thomas de Groot are good. But
learning to use this program would not fit our time frame.
Again: we request help of a POV-Ray artist in developing the ship hulls. Who
would like to participate this project? We want to create a big number of
ships! And we have the information to assist you. And we can take over the
deck constructions.
Greetings,
Sven Littkowski
