When I found Wings3D I tried to output .OBJ from pov (because I
thought it would let me tweak meshes). Writing was easy, but getting
Wings to read them was not. I later found, maybe 6 .OBJ formats, none
of which Wings3D used :-{

You might try bringing them into Poseray, and then re exporting them as .OBJ
from Poseray. I found that Poserays .OBJ output can make certain meshes more
compatible with programs that read .OBJ, like Crossroads, and Anim8or.
