Could it be the sky_sphere with ambient 1? I don't think a surface with
ambient 1 shows shadows.

Thank you very much Ib. On the right track. What I'd initially
done, is to take the sky_sphere out completely (I'd forgotten that).
So, I've just put it back in and made ambient 0. I now have my shadows
back again in the whole scene with the knot pattern in, but now I have
another problem - it shot straight down to 9PPS without AA turned on!
<Help!>
I have to make some decisions... ;)
