POV-Ray will cost you at least half of your spare time for the rest of
your life.

At least that's what it's cost ME...

John

exactly why commercial options should be explored, it is unfair to expect
any shortfall in income to be met by an individual developer.

Mugs & Keyrings are a short term soloution to a problem that is only going
to increase (in cost), and there will come a point when giving povray away
simply becomes to expensive. Best to tackle the difficult questions raised
by povray needing to finicially earn its keep in the long term now.

There are plenty of options for income that do not involve the
share\crippleware route.

It would be nice if there was some way of making donations to the irtc/pov
sites. I've got the keyrings, cds, etc.

Couldn't there be a virtual product? (aka a donation).

I mean I could order another cd, keyring, whatever, but then the amount donated
to the orgs is less, and I end up with a product I don't need.

You can give it to somebody who you want to be interested in poving. CDs for
math/art/tech teacher in school nearest you. Keyring for your best friend.
It's a nice enigmatic type of gift ;-)

Well, yes, but I'm still having to find someone to give something to in order to
not give as much money as I could if I didn't...

... that last sentence probably runs under Perl....

How much do the IRTC CD's cover? Ie, half the cost, most of the cost,
almost nothing?

Maybe selling poster-size prints of winning entries, something along the
lines of a subscription?

For that matter, perhaps a calendar of the winners?

That sounds like a bonza idea - I'd definitely be up for a IRTC calendar and
perhaps a top 12 of the top 10...

I had been sort of oblivious to the running costs of pov but the recent
discussions have taught me otherwise - so I'm off to buy a keyring.

I think making posters would stop people entering - that and you would need
to render at much higher res for print purposes.

PayPal could be used to do this.

Paypal is only suitable if the target audience is located in the US, non US
residents are forced to sign up before they can send money to a paypal
account. and the rates for getting money out of a paypal account for non US
residents is prohibitive
