I think the mock-criticism in your post was mistaken for real critcism. Also
don't forget that programmers are socially inadequate nerds with no love-life
and over-inflated egos, so it's not surprising that they react in totally
unreasonable manner to fair and constructive criticism.

It might not have been intentional, but you are wrong:

"For some reason the Pov Ray Gods have decided its okay to expire the current
beta without putting up a new one"

This sounds a lot like sarcasm. "Pov Ray Gods" sounds like "do they think
they are superior to us and do whatever they please without taking into
account us?"

"Hopefully these so called programming mavens will see the harm they are
doing"

This is an insulting expression ("these so called programming mavens") and
shows a degree of arrogance: You are the suffering victim and they are the
bad guys who are making you suffer either because of ignorance, incapability
or even deliberately.

If this is not despise, what is?

IMHO it was meant as a joke - in the sense that it was so offensive that no-one
could take it seriously. IMHO it wasn't nearly offensive enough, hence the
confusion. 'Course, I could be wrong, in which case Mitchell can eat sh** and
die... ;)

Also note that the sharp criticism did not come from POV-Team members, but users.

I have been beta testing for quite a while now so my memory has grown
fuzzy on the actual sequence of events :)

Pseudo sarcastic humor. It probably loses effect in the translation to Finnish.
A lot of foreigners don't get our jokes because they take the words themselves
to literally and don't understand the nuances of our language.

You are forgiven.

3.1a was released to the public. I don't know if 3.1 was.

I've excused Mitch on mail. I was far from meaning of his post becouse of
limitations of my English or I understanded it correctly but somehow Middle
Europe sense of humor is completly different.

3.1, 3.1a, b, c, d, e, f and g (as far as I recall we didn't skip
any letters) were all released to the public.

I expect that there will be a 3.5a and so forth, also (for bugfixes).

Some, however (b, c, and f) didn't last very long.
